A client forwards a Reddit thread you never saw, already surfacing in Google and AI answers, and asks why it’s missing from your Reddit social listening report. A social media listening routine keeps that email from landing.
Give each client one goal and one query. Reddit search and Reddit Pro cover one or two brands; at three or more, a listening tool takes over. Every thread then gets one outcome, from reply to ignore, and a named owner.
What is Reddit social listening?
Reddit social listening is the practice of tracking public Reddit posts and comments that mention a brand, its competitors or its product category, then deciding what to do with each one. It only reaches public threads. Private messages and private communities fall outside it.
That boundary matters the moment you promise a client coverage. You can report on what people say in the open, where a buyer asks for recommendations or an unhappy customer spells out what went wrong.
Listening is also a different job from monitoring your own channels. A social inbox shows comments and DMs on pages you manage. Listening watches conversations nobody tagged you in, in communities you don’t own. Reddit sits almost entirely in the second group, because a thread about your client rarely tags the client.
Why does Reddit matter for social listening in 2026?
Reddit earns its own listening routine because its threads keep working long after they’re posted. An analysis of AI citations found Reddit was the most-cited source across the major AI answer engines, from ChatGPT to Google’s AI Overviews. A thread about your client’s category can shape what an assistant tells the next buyer.
So the decision rule is narrow. Watch the specific threads that answer buyer questions in your client’s category, because those are the pages AI engines lift. Then judge each one by whether it keeps resurfacing over a month before you act on it.
A thread that keeps getting new comments and shows up when you ask an assistant about the category deserves a response plan. A one-day pile-on usually doesn’t.
The value of real human perspective has never been higher.
Citation patterns shift between engines and over time, so treat any single study as a snapshot of today’s sourcing habits. The resurfacing test holds up either way.
How do you set up a Reddit listening project step by step?
Setting up Reddit listening comes down to four decisions per brand, made in order. Pick the goal first, because it decides what you search for, and the search results decide where and how often you look. Write all four down per client before you open any tool.
Step 1: Pick one goal per brand
Start each client on a single goal. Pick it from these four:
Reputation: what people say about the brand by name.
Competitor comparisons: threads where buyers weigh the client against named rivals.
Product feedback: bug reports and feature requests.
Content ideas: questions that keep coming up in the client’s category.
Reputation is usually the right first goal for a client who pays for a monthly report, because it’s the one they’ll ask about.
Add a second goal once the first query runs clean and you know what a normal week of volume looks like for that brand. Starting with all four buries you in noise before you have a baseline.
Step 2: Write a query for each goal
Reddit search supports the boolean operators AND/OR/NOT, and they’re case sensitive. A lowercase “and” is just another search word, so type operators in capitals every time.
Parentheses control how search terms are grouped. For example, jaguar NOT car OR vehicle can return very different results than jaguar NOT (car OR vehicle). The second query explicitly excludes results containing either “car” or “vehicle,” helping you focus on the animal.
When you search posts, results only need to include some of your search words unless you force an exact match. Put multi-word brand names in quotes, or a search for a client called Acme Studio returns every thread about a studio. Here’s a starting query per goal, with Acme Studio standing in for your client and Rival Co for a competitor:
Goal
Example query
Reputation
("Acme Studio" OR acmestudio) NOT (hiring OR job)
Competitor comparisons
("Acme Studio" OR "Rival Co") AND (vs OR alternative OR switch)
Product feedback
"Acme Studio" AND (bug OR broken OR "feature request")
Content ideas
"content calendar" AND (agency OR freelancer) AND (template OR how)

Example query
"content calendar" AND (agency OR freelancer) AND (template OR how)
Reddit’s search results for the reputation query “Acme Studio,” sorted by new.
Step 3: Shortlist subreddits from the results
Run each query across all of Reddit for a week before you narrow anything. Note which subreddits keep returning hits, because that’s where the conversation about this client actually happens.
For example, for a B2B client the list is often a few professional communities such as r/socialmedia or r/agency. For a consumer brand it’s product and hobby subreddits, plus local ones.
Example of the subreddits a coffee brand’s listening query might surface.
Read each shortlisted subreddit’s rules while you’re there and write down whether it allows brand accounts to post or reply. That single note settles most of your triage decisions later, before anyone drafts a reply.
Step 4: Set a check-in cadence per goal
Match the cadence to how fast each goal goes stale. Reputation queries for a consumer brand facing a product recall or viral customer complaint deserve a daily look. Content ideas and competitor comparisons hold up fine with a weekly check.
For example, a skincare brand could organize its AI search monitoring like this:
Goal
Example AI search query
Check-in cadence
Why
Brand reputation
“Is [Brand] safe for sensitive skin?”
Daily
Track changes in AI answers while customer complaints are circulating.
Competitor visibility
“[Brand] vs. CeraVe: Which is better for dry skin?”
Weekly
Monitor how AI compares the brand against competitors.
Product discovery
“Best moisturizers for dry skin”
Weekly
See whether the brand appears in relevant AI recommendations.
Content opportunities
“What ingredients should I avoid in a moisturizer?”
Weekly

Put the cadence on paper, because the volume adds up fast. In this example, the skincare brand has four queries to monitor: one daily and three weekly. Across eight brands with the same setup, that’s 32 tracked queries, with eight daily checks and 24 weekly checks. Someone needs to own each one.
Can you do Reddit social listening for free?
Yes. Reddit’s own search, used with its field filters, covers a free listening routine for one or two brands checked weekly.
Once you check three or more brands, or a client wants sentiment and alerts in the same report, manual searches stop keeping up and the routine belongs in a listening tool.
Reddit search with field filters
Reddit’s field filters help you narrow search results to specific communities, users, or parts of a post. For example, subreddit limits results to a particular community, while author finds posts from a specific user. Write the filter directly before the search term, with no space between them.
For searches containing multiple words, use quotation marks. For example: title:”kitten gif” finds posts with that phrase in the title.
If you’re monitoring brand mentions, a query like subreddit:agency “Acme Studio” searches for mentions of “Acme Studio” within the r/agency community instead of across all of Reddit. This cuts down irrelevant results and makes relevant conversations easier to find.
Reddit Pro and its Trends tool
Reddit Pro is a toolkit for businesses that includes a Trends tool for tracking conversations around specific keywords.
The tool offers two types of keyword tracking:
Standard keywords: Show popular posts and comments mentioning your chosen terms, along with the subreddits where those conversations happen.
Smart keywords: Add conversation volume trends and related keywords, helping you understand how discussions change over time. However, this feature is available only for select topics.
For example, a skincare brand could track terms like “sensitive skin” or “moisturizer recommendations” to find relevant Reddit discussions and identify communities where potential customers are asking questions.
Smart keywords can provide additional insights when supported, but don’t rely on them for niche brands or highly specific topics. Standard keyword tracking is a more practical starting point.

How do you track Reddit mentions across clients in Planable?
Planable is the social media management tool that lets you track Reddit mentions for multiple clients through separate workspaces. Each client can have its own brand keywords and a dedicated Reddit mention feed, making it easier to monitor conversations without mixing results from different brands.
Reddit is one of the eight sources supported by Planable’s Social Listening feature. You can monitor Reddit mentions alongside your existing social media calendar, without setting up a separate listening tool.
Planable’s social media calendar, where Reddit mentions sit alongside the rest of your content workflow.
For example, if your agency manages three skincare brands, you can create a workspace for each one and track its brand mentions independently. This keeps Reddit conversations, social media content, and client monitoring organized in one place.
Each Planable workspace supports 1 brand keyword, 3 topic keywords, and 3 competitor keywords. Brand keywords track reputation, competitor keywords track comparisons, and topic keywords cover product feedback and content ideas.
To monitor Reddit mentions, open Social listening from the left sidebar, select Brand or Topic, and filter the source to Reddit. You can also filter mentions by sentiment to find negative conversations before a client call. Each mention includes an AI-generated sentiment label.
Be clear with clients about what it won’t do. It isn’t real-time: the brand keyword refreshes every 24 hours and topic keywords every 7 days. It reads public posts, not your own channels.
Comments and DMs on pages you manage go to Planable’s Social Inbox, a separate add-on with its own channel list:
Comments: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
DMs: Facebook and Instagram.
Planable’s Social Inbox, where comments and DMs on your own channels are handled separately from Reddit listening.
Reddit isn’t one of its channels, and replies to Reddit threads still happen on Reddit.
Also, if a client needs hour-by-hour crisis monitoring, Planable is not a fit, and you’ll need a more advanced social listening tool.
Social Listening costs $99 per workspace per month or $990 per workspace per year. It starts with a free trial for 30 days and is billed per workspace, so each client’s listening cost sits on that client’s workspace.
Which Reddit threads should you reply to, and which should you only log?
Reply only when a thread asks a direct question your brand can answer with something new, and the subreddit allows brand accounts. Everything else gets one of the other outcomes in the table below, and every outcome has a named owner. That way no thread sits in limbo between the social team and support while it climbs in search results.

Keep replies rare. Reddiquette’s rule of thumb is the 9:1 ratio, meaning only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content. A brand account that only shows up to defend itself burns goodwill in the exact threads you’re trying to win.
Use sentiment to sort the feed, then check the label before you act on it. Planable gives each mention a sentiment label, and you can edit it by hand on any individual mention when the AI reads sarcasm as praise.
If one community only ever produces noise, you can exclude a source so nothing from it appears again.
Hiding a Reddit mention in Planable Social Listening so a noisy source stops resurfacing.
For escalation, set volume and sentiment alert rules on the brand keyword. A fired rule shows up immediately in the in-app notifications drawer, while email and Slack notifications go out at 09:00 workspace time. Plan the morning triage around that batch.

How do you turn Reddit insights into content and client reports?
Reddit listening pays off twice: recurring questions become posts, and the month’s threads become a client report.
Log each recurring question where your team plans content, then report monthly on what the client can act on. That’s volume and sentiment, plus the top threads and the action taken on each one.
From a logged thread to a drafted post
Save each recurring question as a note in the Planable calendar on the day you plan to answer it. Notes hold up to 160 characters, which fits the question and the subreddit it came from. When you’re ready to write, a note converts to a post draft in one click.

Argue about the angle before the client sees anything. Internal comments on Pro and above are only visible to team members, not clients, so the debate over whether a thread is worth a post stays inside the team.

The monthly Reddit report
In Planable, you can pull the month’s data two ways. The manual route is the Export CSV button, which offers Download Metrics and Download Mentions. Once you report on several clients, the faster route is the Planable MCP. It lets an AI assistant like Claude read your Social Listening data and draft the report for every client in one go.
The Export CSV menu in Planable Social Listening, with Download Metrics and Download Mentions options.
To set it up:
Connect Planable to your assistant. Go to Account settings → Integrations, pick the tool and approve the read scope. Each client workspace needs the Social Listening add-on.
List each client’s keywords. The assistant returns the brand and topic keywords tracked in every workspace.
Pull the month’s totals. For each keyword, it gets mention volume, engagement and sentiment, with a per-platform breakdown. Reddit’s numbers come out on their own line, so you don’t have to filter by hand. Ask it to compare them against the previous month.
Pull the top threads. It lists the month’s Reddit mentions sorted by engagement, each with the author, the text and a link.
Fill in the table. Ask it to format the results as the report below, one page per client.
A prompt you can reuse each month or turn it into a scheduled project based on your needs:
For each client workspace, list the tracked keywords. Compare Reddit mentions and sentiment for September against August, and list the five Reddit threads with the most engagement, with links. Format it as one monthly report table per client.

The assistant drafts the first three rows. The action row still comes from your team, because the MCP reads listening data, not what happened after. If you log each triage decision as a calendar note, the assistant can read those notes too and fill that row. Check the sentiment split by hand before it goes to the client, since automated sentiment misreads sarcasm.
The action row is the one clients read first. A volume chart shows that Reddit noticed them. A row showing a complaint routed to support and resolved within the week shows what the agency did about it.
Reddit social listening FAQs
Is Reddit growing or declining?
Growing. Reddit’s weekly active uniques increased 24% year over year to 514.6 million, crossing half a billion. For listening, more people means more threads to sift through, so tight boolean queries and a clear triage rule matter more each quarter than they did the one before.
Can your Reddit activity be tracked?
Yes, for public activity only. Posts and comments in public subreddits are visible to Reddit search and to listening tools like Planable, which means a brand can see what you’ve written about it there. Your public posting history stays searchable too: a review you left years ago can still land in a brand’s monthly report.
What is social listening in marketing?
Social listening in marketing is tracking public conversations about a brand and its category, competitors included, then acting on what you find. On Reddit, that means watching the threads where buyers compare options, because those discussions shape what people, and increasingly AI answer engines, say about a category.
Ready to start listening on Reddit?
If you handle one or two brands, start this week with Reddit search and Reddit Pro. Write one query per goal, run it across all of Reddit for a week, and let the results pick your subreddits. Set the cadence before the first report is due.
If you run three or more clients, or you’ve promised Reddit numbers in a monthly report, move the routine where your calendar already lives. Give each client a brand keyword in its own workspace, filter the feed to Reddit, and run every thread through the triage table.
Your first client is the test case: try the setup in Planable with a free Social Listening trial, then roll it out to the other workspaces.
