Twitter hashtags best practices
Let’s talk Twitter hashtags, those important keywords that can magically turn your tweet into a global conversation piece.
Keep your hashtags relevant
Imagine you’re tweeting about your cat’s new trick but using #MarketingConference. Just… why? Keep it relevant, people. If you’re at a marketing conference, try #MarketingConference or #DigitalMarketing. Save #CuteCatVideos for Fluffy’s acrobatics.
Less is more
Ever seen a tweet that’s 10% content and 90% hashtags? Yeah, don’t be that person. Stick to 1-2 hashtags per tweet. Your followers will thank you for not making their eyes bleed. Example: “Excited to share insights at the #MarketingConference! Join us for innovative strategies. #DigitalMarketing” See? Simple, clean, and effective.
Trendspotting
Jumping on trending hashtags can skyrocket your tweet’s visibility. Tools like Twitter Trends, Hashtagify, or Trendsmap are your new BFFs. Just make sure the trending tag is actually relevant to your content. Example: “Our latest product is now live! Check it out: [link] #NewRelease #TechTrends” Boom, instant visibility boost.
Get unique
Launching a new campaign? Create a unique hashtag to track the buzz. Keep it short, sweet, and memorable. No one wants to type out #OurCompanysSuperAmazingProductLaunch2024. Instead, go for #CompanyXLaunch2024. Your thumbs will thank you.
Short and sweet
Speaking of long hashtags, don’t. Just don’t. #ThisIsOurNewProductLaunch2024 is a crime against social media. Opt for #NewProduct2024 instead. Trust me, less is more.
CamelCase for the win
Multi-word hashtags should be readable. Enter CamelCase, where you capitalize the first letter of each word. #SummerSale is a breeze compared to #summersale. Your followers shouldn’t need a decoder ring to read your hashtags.
Mix it up
Use a blend of popular and niche hashtags. Broad hashtags like #AI will get you visibility, while niche ones like #TechWebinar will target your specific audience. Example: “Discover the future of AI at our webinar! #AI #MachineLearning #TechWebinar” You’re casting a wide net and fishing in the right pond.
Monitor and adjust
Keep an eye on which hashtags are performing and which are just taking up space. Drop the duds and experiment with new tags. It’s a hashtag jungle out there, stay agile.
Join the conversation
Engage with others using the same hashtags. It’s called social media for a reason. Jump into discussions and make connections. Example: “Loved the insights shared by @User at #SocialMediaSummit!” Who knows? You might make a new follower or ten.
Avoid the no-nos
Steer clear of banned or controversial hashtags unless you want a PR nightmare. Always do a quick search before tagging to make sure you’re not stepping into a minefield. Your brand image will thank you.
